Iain works in a dedicated ultrasound and clinical practice at ultrasoundCBR. This is a new concept where a team of highly experienced and dedicated sonographers will work with Iain to provide a new level of patient experience and clinical care.
Iain was (previously) a founder of Garran Medical Imaging in 2015 and worked in the practice until June 2024. It was designed to deliver the best possible service and provide diagnosis using advanced imaging technology. Garran Medical Imaging opened for business in July 2015 and set new quality benchmarks for Canberra. Iain hopes this will continue after his tenure at the helm. He now works with a dedicated team of sonographers and staff at ultrasoundCBR.
Iain has also worked as a Diagnostic Imaging Physician in Bega, Bowral, and elsewhere in Canberra over the last 25 years. He is passionate about finding new and better ways to improve diagnosis and management for rural areas. People are always the focus so that every step of the patient journey has become a part of Iain’s paradigm for improving patient care.
Originally a graduate of Sydney University he has done post-graduate medical training in Sydney, Canberra, and Adelaide. After 10 years of post graduate training he worked as a Rheumatologist and later moved across into diagnostic imaging (nuclear medicine and ultrasound). Iain has been a pioneer in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for both diagnosis and guided injection therapy. He has performed over 40,000 therapeutic injections.
Iain’s diverse medical specialisation has led him to an important intersection between diagnostic imaging and clinical medicine. In particular he has developed a focus on musculoskeletal medicine which he can approach from multiple perspectives. He is as comfortable assessing the patient clinically as interpreting and performing their scans.
Iain is based in Canberra and has always been enthusiastic about bringing specialist medicine to surrounding regional centres having previously run rheumatology clinics in Wagga Wagga, Bateman’s Bay, and Goulburn, ultrasound clinics in Bowral and a Nuclear Medicine practice in Bega.
Iain is an early adopter who has championed novel techniques in rheumatology, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. He was one of the first to adopt fusion nuclear medicine in 2008 with Siemens’ symbia SPECT-CT system and collected data on their first 1000 cases which showed how revolutionary the system was for clinical medicine (see here). In collaboration with Siemens he undertook research with xSPECT/CT (https://doi.org/10.1186/s41824-017-0024-9) and direct quantification. He has pioneered Tc-PSMA SPECT/CT in Australia (https://doi.org/10.1002/pros.24538). He has also worked in an advisory role with Samsung ultrasound in the development of new ultrasound techniques and applications.
Iain is an accredited Australasian Society of Ultrasound Sonologist (DDU 1998 and recertified 2013-2017, 2017-2021, 2021-2024, and 2025-2029), a fellow of the Australian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists, a fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians, and has a keen interest in astrophysics.
