Iain is a founder of Garran Medical Imaging which is a Canberra diagnostic imaging practice designed to deliver the best possible service and provide diagnosis using advanced imaging technology. Together with Dr Kevin Osborn and a caring, enthusiastic team they deliver cutting edge diagnostic imaging. Some of the imaging technology is in the development phase. Garran Medical Imaging opened for business in July 2015 and seeks to set new quality benchmarks.
Iain also works as a Diagnostic Imaging Physician in Bega. He is passionate about finding new and better ways to improve diagnosis and management for rural areas. People are always the focus so that every step of the patient journey has become a part of Iain’s paradigm for improving patient care.
Originally a graduate of Sydney University he has done post-graduate medical training in Sydney, Canberra, and Adelaide. After 10 years of post graduate training he worked as a Rheumatologist and later moved across into diagnostic imaging (nuclear medicine and ultrasound). Iain has been a pioneer in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for both diagnosis and guided injection therapy. He has performed over 40,000 therapeutic injections.
Iain’s diverse medical specialisation has led him to an important intersection between diagnostic imaging and clinical medicine. In particular he has developed a focus on musculoskeletal medicine which he can approach from multiple perspectives. He is as comfortable assessing the patient clinically as interpreting and performing their scans.
Iain is based in Canberra and has always been enthusiastic about bringing specialist medicine to surrounding regional centres having previously run rheumatology clinics in Wagga Wagga, Bateman’s Bay, and Goulburn, and later ultrasound in Bowral and Bega. Currently he continues to work with South East Nuclear Medicine in a joint venture with South East Radiology which has been operating in Bega, New South Wales since 2012. This is a state of the art nuclear medicine facility that provides services to the far south coast of New South Wales.
Iain is an early adopter who has championed novel techniques in rheumatology, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. He was one of the first to adopt fusion nuclear medicine in 2008 with Siemens’ symbia SPECT-CT system and collected data on their first 1000 cases which showed how revolutionary the system was for clinical medicine (see here). In collaboration with Siemens he is currently working to collect similar data on xSPECT and direct quantitative bone scanning. He also works in an advisory role with Samsung Medison in the development of new ultrasound techniques and applications.
Iain is an accredited Australasian Society of Ultrasound Sonologist (DDU 1998 and recertified 2013-2017 and 2017-2021), a fellow of the Australian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists, a fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians, and has a keen interest in astrophysics.
